Abstract

In recent years, various new techniques of minimally invasive thyroidectomy have emerged. These include approaches to the thyroid from the neck, the axilla, the breast, the retro-auricular space, and even the mouth. This book describes the different techniques and approaches in detail, and presents the equipment required to support minimally invasive thyroidectomy, including intraoperative monitoring and energy devices. In addition, the basic preoperative techniques that are a prerequisite to successful thyroidectomy, such as the ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration biopsy techniques, are presented, and individual chapters are devoted to thyroid pathology, complications, outcomes, and post-thyroidectomy quality of life. Important related topics are also discussed, including guidelines for managing papillary and medullary thyroid cancer and the surgical management of metastatic lymph nodes.   The editors of Minimally Invasive Thyroidectomy are internationally renowned endocrine surgeons, and the authors include founders of the techniques described as well as other distinguished pioneers and specialists. The clearly presented, up-to-date text and the many color pictures and medical illustrations make the book very user-friendly and ideal for the busy surgeon or endocrinologist who is interested in the management of thyroid diseases.

Abstract

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, claiming millions of lives each year. Cancer biology is an essential research field to understand how cancer develops, evolves, and responds to therapy. By taking advantage of a series of “omics” technologies (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, and epigenomics), computational methods in bioinformatics and machine learning can help scientists and researchers to decipher the complexity of cancer heterogeneity, tumorigenesis, and anticancer drug discovery. Particularly, bioinformatics enables the systematic interrogation and analysis of cancer from various perspectives, including genetics, epigenetics, signaling networks, cellular behavior, clinical manifestation, and epidemiology. Moreover, thanks to the influx of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data in the postgenomic era and multiple landmark cancer-focused projects, such as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Clinical Proteomic Tumor Analysis Consortium (CPTAC), machine learning has a uniquely advantageous role in boosting data-driven cancer research and unraveling novel methods for the prognosis, prediction, and treatment of cancer.

Abstract

In the past several years, the otorhinolaryngology sector has had a significantimpact on social life. About 10% of the cancers that affect the populationannually concern the head and neck, and each year the guidelines evolve andchange.Emergencies of the otolaryngology sector are among the most common, withnumerous increases in hospitalizations in the ENT department (e.g., bleeding, abscesses, and dyspnoea). Interventions in the election can significantly improvepatients' quality of life and help avoid future complications.Given the importance of the medical and surgical branch of otorhinolaryngology,we want to underline the impact in social life of this important area.
